The term Celtic is first and foremost a linguistic term referring to the languages of the Celtic language group which consists of the Goidelic branch (Irish Gaelic, Manx Gaelic, and Scots Gaelic) and the Brythonic branch (Welsh, Breton, and Cornish). This orgy is the culmination of an exploration of Celtic Music and language which began on WHRB in 2001. We will explore the range and diversity of the Celtic languages and their expression in poetry and music — that is, music with lyrics in a Celtic language. We will explore Celtic these forms within the cultural context of Celtic-language communities. See how native points of view inform the traditional musical forms of the culture, and how language adapts to different genres of music such as classical, jazz, pop, rap, electronica, and club music.

We will have recordings from groups which sing in all six Celtic languages such as Epona and Sandra Reid, guest speakers from the Boston community, and excerpts from lectures and Celtic-language radio stations such as Raidio na Gaeltachta (Ireland) and Radio Cymru (Wales), as well as short stories and proverbs from the various Celtic nations.

The playlist and other information is available at http://orgy.celts.me.

Irish (Gaeilge) -- Ceol na hÉireann: we will explore the sounds of the Gaeltacht, Irish-speaking Ireland, with a population of about half a million speakers out of six million. We’ll hear traditional, unaccompanied sean-nos style singing, ballads and songs, and other genres such as jazz, reggae, and club music, as well as hybrids from bands such as Kíla. Explore Ireland through the medium of Irish Gaelic.

Welsh (Cymraeg) -- Music of Y Fro Gymraeg: we will explore the music of Y Fro Gymraeg, Welsh-speaking Wales, consisting of about a half million people out of a total population of three million whose "mode of everyday communication is largely through the Welsh language, and whose cultural transactions take place primarily through forms and institutions specific to that language. Welsh-language popular music took on its present-day, recognizably modern shape in the 1960s, fueled by a burgeoning of cultural assertiveness in the traditionally Welsh-speaking, largely rural areas of the west and North.” We explore three major waves of Welsh-language music, from the '60s to the present, and the great variety of musical genres represented. We attempt to situate these waves in the historical and societal contexts which gave them rise as the battle for the survival of the Welsh language was waged and continues. We'll feature major Welsh record labels such as Sain, Fitamin Un, Dockrad, and Ankstmusik, as well as the range of Welsh music from the acclaimed Male Voice Choirs and Bryn Terfel to modern groups such as Tystion, Skep, and Catatonia.

Scots Gaelic (Gàidhlig) -- Ceol na h-Alba: Explore the music of the Gàidhealtachd, consisting of about 60 thousand speakers out of five million. Music will range from traditional songs and ballads by such artists as Mairi Smith to modern fusions of traditional songs and contemporary beats and sounds by such artists as Capercaillie, Salsa Celtica, Martyn Bennett, and Talitha MacKenzie.

Breton (Brezhoneg): the sounds of Brittany as heard through the language of Breton (Brezhoneg), with about 300,000 speakers out of 4 million. We'll hear a range from traditional songs and ballads to modern fusions of traditional songs and contemporary beats and sounds.

Cornish (Kernewek) from Cornwall and Manx (Gaelg) from the Isle of Mann: Both of these languages died (Cornish in the 18th century, and the last native speaker of Manx in 1974), although both have been revived and are currently spoken (~2000 Cornish speakers out of 500,000, ~2000 Manx speakers out of 76,000). Because of the rarity of the languages, we have a far smaller selection than usual to share with you, and we will supplement it with traditional instrumental music of the areas, as well as discussing the languages and reflecting on their fight for continued survival.
